Advice for actor's makeup -male stage makeup for Christmas production?

Director has asked for: ';makeup for men and children - natural shade of lipstick and liner, natural shade of eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, powder.'; (She has foundation and blush for the ladies, left that out for the guys and children) Obviously, the men are supposed to look natural. But what does that mean ? PLEASE ANSWER ALL QUES. THX. 1). Do I buy the shade color ';natural'; when buying makeup or a match to skin tone and lip tone ? 2). Wouldn't a match defeat the purpose of makeup on the stage ? 3). How is eye shadow put on eye, do you start with light on top then work to dark on the bottom ? Or the other way. 4). Eyeliner pencil, how would a guy's be put on. 5). Would a guy skip the eyebrow pencil.

Hi! I was in theatre for 6 years, and did everybody's stage makeup. First of all, the point of stage makeup is to keep you from being washed out in the lights and to add emphasis to your eyes and lips so that your expressions can be read from the back of the theatre.

1) It is VITALLY important that you buy the correct shade of foundation to match your skin tone. If you do not, you will look either ghost like or orange on stage. If you are not sure what shade you should buy, take a girl friend (she would love to help you, i'm sure) or talk to one of the employees in the makeup department. Generally, the makeup in the bottle will look different than it will on your face, so it's important to talk to someone who knows what shade will be best for you.

2)If you don't match your skin tone, then on stage you will look absolutely ridiculous because your face will look different from your neck, etc.

3)No eyeshadow for guys, unless you are playing a drag queen a la Rocky Horror Picture Show.

4) As for eyeliner, I have found that no guy can get the eyeliner close ebough to your eyelashes to do the trick. I would have a girl help you, I'm sure she won't mind. You need to completely line the top lid, and then line the bottom lid until the point where your lower eyelashes are nearly nonexistent. You will be able to see what I'm talking about. If you can't get a girl to help you, I would get a liquid eyeliner, since it is easier to take off, and get as close as you possibly can to your eyelashes. For the top lid, you will want to close your eye and pull the lid out towards your ear. it will create a firmer line, which will be less likely to mess up if you blink, and it will also make it easier to get close to the eyelashes. On the lower lid (if using liquid) make a series of small dots that are very close together and end up making a line right in between your eyelashes. If using a pencil, you have to draw a line.

5) YOU ABSOLUTELY CANNOT SKIP THE EYELINER OR MASCARA!!! IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE MAKEUP!!! For the eyebrow pencil, you only need it if you have light colored hair. From blonde to medium brown, I would say. Always use a brown eyebrow pencil, but not too dark. Use a light brown.

6) You need mascara on both sets of lashes, and pile it on thick!

Also, for lipstick choose a neutral, lip-colored matte lipstick. It needs to be a little darker than your natural shade, but not red or pink. You don't want to look like a girl, after all. When in doubt, choose a brown.

1) match the makeup to your skin tone, for sure, use an

2) a match does not defeat the purpose of the makeup, especially for men, the idea is to not be washed out under the lights.

3)I wouldn't bother with any eyeshadow as a man, I wouldn't think besides a bit of light taupe colour on the bottom lid.

4)I would use a shade like sable, warmed up in your hands so it doesn't pull, in a very scant line on the bottom lid.

5)I wouldn't use an eyebrow pencil on the brows, maybe an eyesshadow that is close to the same shade as your brows

blonde=dark taupe

red=sienna

brown=dark sable

black=dark brown (so you don't look like an angry freak!)
